Kowtow

Definition of Kowtow:

to kneel and touch the forehead to the ground in expression of deep respect, worship or submission

Sample Sentences:

  • You rarely see anyone kowtow to another individual today in America.
  • Kowtow is primarily found in China, but is done in other parts of the world.
  • Chinese people kowtow to their Gods.

Usage:

Kowtow, also known to be spelled as kotow, is traditionally a Chinese ritual.  It was commonly used in religious worships.  It shows a matter of great respect for another person.  It is still used today when foreign countries meet for a serious exchange of services.

Interpolate

Definition of Interpolate:

to insert or introduce between other elements or parts; to insert into a conversation/text

Sample Sentences:

  • I have been known to interpolate my opinion sometimes when it's not needed.
  • Putting my friend on hold, I interpolated my mothers' number into the text messages.
  • I interpolated the paper into small strands.

Usage:

A huge pet peeve of mine, when people interpolate themselves into my conversation.  It seems as if they it's their right to become involved in others' conversations.  Another thing that can nag me, whenever people, besides parents, interpolate themselves into my bedroom without asking.

Incontrovertible

Definition of Incontrovertible:

not able to be denied or disputed

Sample Sentences:

  • This is totally incontrovertible since you signed the contract.
  • When the witness provided the evidence, the defendant was completely in shock of the incontrovertible proof.
  • The team were on a 10-0 run, they seemed incontrovertible!

Usage:

In school, teachers should be treated incontrovertible.  Many kids don't understand that but whenever you're away from home and at school, teachers become your parents.  They, as well as their classroom, should be treated with the respect we give our parents.

Impeach

Definition of Impeach:

to make an accusation against; to bring formal charges against (a public official) for wrongdoings while in office.

Sample Sentences:

  • Very rarely do you see a President get impeached.
  • Bill Clinton was the most recent President who was impeached.
  • To impeach someone, you have to gather various sorts of information that is factual.

Paragraph:

When the word impeach is mentioned, what is the first thing you think of?  I say Presidents.  Presidents can be impeached for various reasons: treason, bribery, misdemeanors and a ton of others.  Removing a President from office requires for their Vice President to take over office and finish his/her term.

Chicanery

Definition of Chicanery:

The use of trickery to achieve a political, financial, or legal purpose.

Sample Sentences:

  • I hate movies that involve chicanery.
  • The US has never used chicanery to take money from another country.
  • Many people who run for elections try to use chicanery to earn a certain position.

Usage:

There are some people, such as; public officials, business owners, realtors, car salesmen, any type of person you can think of that has been involved with chicanery in their career.  Not every person has but a lot of people who want to get over and have more money in their pockets has done some type of evil and tricked others.  It is very sad but sometimes that's just how this world functions.

Hegemony

Definition of Hegemony:

influence of a region

Sample Sentences:

  • There is much hegemony all over parts of the United States.
  • All places need hegemony at certain times.
  • Hegemony could be good or bad for a particular place.

Usage:

Paragraph:

Hegemony happens everyday.  In order for businesses to succeed, they will need to use some type of hegemony.  If there's no one to influence others in life who would actually be successful and claim there was no one there to help them?  At some point in time every person in this world needs someone or something to influence and motivate them to do whatever it is that makes them happy.

Enfranchise

Definition of Enfranchise:

give the right to vote; to free a slave.

Sample Sentences:

  • Women were enfranchised in the 1920's.
  • Many whites wanted to enfranchise many slaves because they didn't think slavery was right.
  • Today, when a person turns 18, they have complete enfranchisement.

Usage:

  1. Deseret News

Paragraph:

Women were enfranchised in the 1920's.  This means they were given the right to vote.  Slaves didn't become enfranchised until the 13th Amendment was passed.  These are great historic events because without them we wouldn't be where we are today.

Diffident

Definition of Diffident:

modest or shy because of a lack of self-confidence


Sample Sentences:

  • The new student was very diffident.
  • She seemed diffident whenever she walked into the courtroom.
  • Diffident individuals usually have low self-esteem because they're not confident in themselves.

Usage:

Paragraph:

Neil Armstrong was a very diffident guy according to BBC News.  He didn't want to talk about being the first man on the moon when reporters asked how it felt.  He was a modest guy that kept his composure throughout all of his interviews.

Circumnavigate

Definition of Circumnavigate:

traveling all the way around something; object or landmark.

Sample Sentences:

  • As I circumnavigated throughout the school, my legs became tired.
  • People in the military could possible circumnavigate the earth many times.
  • I wouldn't like for anyone to circumnavigate my body.

Usage:

Paragraph:

In the articles above, it talks about people traveling around a certain place.  Whenever you circumnavigate something you have to go around the whole object.  The Magnificent Seven article talks about 7 stand up paddlers who circumnavigated the island Phuket.

Belie

Definition of Belie:

Fail to give a true notion or impression of something; fail to fulfill or justify



Sample Sentences:

  • The outer surface belies the complexity of what is going on inside. 
  • Monday morning came early and belied all the kids in school.
  • The team completely belied their fans.


Usage:


Paragraph:

One of the articles above talks about the belie charges and Iran refuses to cooperate.  The other article talks about the gun control in specifically, Chicago.  Belie means the failure to fulfill or justify something.  It says directly in the first article that the Iran refused to cooperate when Western officials allegedly heard about nuclear weaponization work.  In the gun control article it says Chicago is battling a wave of gun-related violence that belies the claims of gun-control advocates.
